She began her career on the stage, making her Broadway debut in the play ''Taking Sides'' (1996). Farmiga made her television debut on the Fox fantasy adventure series ''Roar'' (1997), and her feature film debut in the drama-thriller ''Return to Paradise'' (1998). Farmiga's breakout role came in 2004, when she was cast as a mother harboring a secret drug habit in the independent drama film ''Down to the Bone''. Her mother is a former schoolteacher, and her father is a retired computer systems analyst.
